Match Report: Doncaster RLFC vs Toronto Wolfpack

Match report by David Rogers

Toronto Wolfpack recorded their most emphatic victory since the club’s inception with an outstanding 82-6 victory over Doncaster.

Paul Rowley’s men destroyed the previously unbeaten Dons, with the manner of the victory moving them above Barrow Raiders at the top of the table on points difference.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks as Blake Wallace launched a sky-high bomb which was spilled by Sam Doherty and the Wolfpack made it count in their next set of six. James Laithwaite was held up just shy of the line following a crunching tackle by Charlie Martin but the Canadians continued to press and Bob Beswick made a darting run from point-blank range to crash over.

The Wolfpack took a firm grip on the game when firstly FuiFui Moimoi spotted a gap in the home defence and he made no mistake as he shrugged off the attentions of Connor Scott to race to the line unchallenged before Jack Bussey added the visitors’ third try, within the first quarter hour, when he took Rhys Jacks’ offload in his stride before successfully reaching for the whitewash.

Minutes later, Toronto turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye and fine flowing hands involving Andrew Dixon and Quentin Laulu-Togagae left the Dons short of cover defence and Liam Kay was the grateful recipient as he galloped to the line with a minimum of fuss.

Soon after, Laulu-Togagae made a superb break through the Dons defensive line and despite Jason Tali’s efforts to halt his progress, the ex-Sheffield fullback stumbled his way to the whitewash before Wallace caught the Dons napping, at the base of the scrum, as he raced clear, leaving two defenders grounded, as he breezed to the line for the visitors’ sixth try.

In the dying seconds of the half, the Dons finally got themselves on the board when Jordan Howden kicked to the corner and Sam Doherty got the better of an aerial duel with Kay before touching down smartly.

Despite a low-key start to the second stanza, Toronto extended their lead when firstly Beswick’s popped pass paved the way for Moimoi to bulldoze his way to the line before good work from Adam Sidlow gave Greg Worthington a glimpse of the line, and the Wolfpack centre evaded the attentions of a last-ditch tackler to go over.

Minutes later, Beswick’s fizzed pass found Kay, who crashed over in the corner before Richard Whiting took advantage of some weak home tackling to waltz to the line following good build-up work by Gary Wheeler.

The Wolfpack were seemingly breaking the Dons line at will and Bussey’s pass presented Jacks with the chance to race under the posts before Wallace exchanged passes with Bussey to notch Toronto’s 12th try of the afternoon, soon after.

Minutes later, Bussey turned from provider to finisher when he latched onto Sidlow’s pass to waltz to the line unchallenged before home frustration boiled over when Jamie Thackray was sent for an early bath for his part in a fracas involving both sets of players.

It was fitting that Toronto had the final say in the dying seconds when Wallace and Bussey combined smartly as the latter raced home for his hat-trick score.
