Match Report: Toronto Wolfpack vs Hunslet RLFC

SIMON DAVIES at Lamport Stadium, Saturday June 24th

Already certain of a place in the Super Eights, Toronto consolidated their league-leading position with another comprehensive victory, despite early pressure from an enterprising Hunslet side.

The Yorkshiremen thrilled their travelling supporters in the opening exchanges with both Jack Lee and Jack Coventry close to scoring. Toronto had to wait until the tenth minute for their first chance when Greg Worthington almost found Liam Kay but the winger was unable to hold on. Kay however provided the impetus for the first try on 16 minutes, breaking deep into Hunslet territory resulting in a penalty from which Sean Penkywicz took a tap and scored from short range.

Another Kay run soon after the kick-off led to Jack Bussey finding Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e who put Ryan Brierley in the clear to score Toronto’s second under the posts. Craig Hall converted for a 10-0 lead.

Hunslet won excellent field position after the ensuing kick-off and capitalized when Jack Walton found Mufaro Mvududu three metres from the line, the centre evading his marker to score. Sanderson’s conversion made it 10-6 after 21 minutes.

Toronto responded with a pair of unconverted tries which were marked by their similarity with passing movements flowing to the right side of the field. On 24 minutes Brierley worked the ball out to Craig Hall, who found winger Jonny Pownall to score in the corner. Three minutes later Brierley found Togaga’e who passed to Hall who found Pownall for a second try in the same spot as his first.

But the visitors remained in the game. After Mvududu came close on a grubber kick, Luke Fowden drove in to near the line and George Flanagan powered over for a second Hunslet try. Sanderson’s conversion brought it back to 18-12 on 32 minutes.

Penkywicz set up the final score of a well-contested first half, offloading to James Laithwaite, who, playing his first game after a long lay-off through a neck injury, touched down to make it 22-12 at the interval.

Hunslet were immediately on the back foot after the break, Flanagan being sinbinned for pulling Fuifui Moimoi back by the hair as he closed in on the line after a 30 metre burst. Kay made the advantage count with an acrobatic 44th minute try set up by Craig Hall. On 51 minutes Lewis Reed gave the Wolfpack a scare almost going clear after an interception but Brierley chased him down. Toronto responded immediately with Brierley giving Togaga’e space on the left to score his first try. Kay had an opportunistic try controversially disallowed on 55 minutes but Richard Whiting was able to make it 38-12 three minutes later the pass again supplied by Brierley.

As Toronto continued to dominate, Togaga’e scored his second from 40 meters out on 64 minutes. Although Moimoi saw yellow for dissent nine minutes from the end, the Wolfpack further extended their lead in the dying minutes. First Hall scored from a pass provided by Whiting and finally Togaga’e beat two men and raced away for an excellent try having received the ball in his own half. Hall secured his fifth successive conversion for a final score of 56-12.

GAME BREAKER: With Hunslet trailing only 10-6 on 24 minutes, Toronto winger Jonny Pownall scored two spectacular tries in the right hand corner in a devastating three minute period which laid the foundation for the Wolfpack’s domination as the game progressed.

GAMESTAR: Wolfpack fullback Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e scored his second hat-trick of tries at Lamport Stadium, the last a fine individual effort which began in his own half.
