Widnes Vikings have announced that Tom Armstrong will be leaving the Club at the end of the 2017 season to join Toronto Wolfpack.
Armstrong, 27, joined Widnes Vikings from Leigh Centurions this season, playing 11 games. The Club has granted his request for an early release from his contract to pursue the opportunity to play in Canada next season.
Head Coach, Denis Betts, says “Tom has worked hard to establish himself this year, but has unfortunately struggled to claim his place in the team and been frustrated with injuries. We recognised that at this stage in his career Tom is seeking a regular starting spot and that Toronto offers him an exciting new challenge.
“I’d like to thank Tom for his hard work this season and to wish him well in his future endeavours. I am sure that he will continue to make a good contribution to the squad until the end of season. The savings made from Tom’s contract will go directly back into our recruitment funds for 2018.”
Tom Armstrong says “I’ve really valued and enjoyed my time at Widnes Vikings. I came here looking to prove myself in the Super League and I’m pleased that I’ve been able to show that I can mix at this level. Unfortunately, I’ve had a difficult time with injuries and have been unable to establish myself in the way that that I hoped. It now feels like the right time to explore new opportunities.”
“I’m excited by the opportunity to move to Toronto Wolfpack. I am looking forward to working under Paul Rowley again and to be playing alongside former teammates from my time at Leigh Centurions. This represents a new challenge and the opportunity to enjoy a new experience.
I’d like to thank all my teammates and everyone at Widnes Vikings. I’ll be continuing to give 110% to support this year’s campaign and wish the Club well for the seasons ahead.”
Toronto Wolfpack Director of Rugby Brian Noble added, “We are pleased to have acquired a player of the calibre of Tom a player of Super League quality with great development potential which we are sure he will fulfil during this exciting phase for the Wolfpack. Tom will be the first of a number of significant signings for the Club which we will be announcing over forthcoming weeks which I’m sure will have the Wolfpack fans buzzing.”
