Toronto Wolfpack are delighted to announce the signing of experienced front row forward Jack Buchanan ahead of the 2018 season. Buchanan joins the Wolfpack on a one-year deal, with the option of a second, less than a week from the start of the club’s Championship campaign and his addition comes as a big boost to the squad.
Buchanan comes to the Wolfpack with plenty of top flight rugby under his belt. Having made his NRL debut as a promising young gun in 2013 for Wests Tigers, he went on to play over 40 games for the Tigers before making the switch to Super League with the Widnes Vikings in 2016.
He quickly became a mainstay for the Vikings, notching up 40 appearances in all competitions but left the club in the off-season. He will now run with the pack with the goal of helping the club achieve promotion to Super League.
Buchanan is a relentlessly consistent player, who tallies up a huge number of carries and tackles throughout long stints in the middle of the field. He is the ideal buy for the club having lost a number of key forwards in the last week.
Having recently returned home to Australia, Buchanan will now be on the first flight back to the UK to link up with his new teammates and get stuck in to one of the biggest challenges of his career to date. Speaking to the club ahead of the move, the prop was understandably excited at what lay ahead and was enthusiastic about playing his rugby for the first time in Canada. He said:
“The attraction to the Wolfpack for me was the chance to be a part of something new and exciting. There is a very promising squad with great coaching staff so I am very grateful to be a part of it.
“The main goal would be promotion to Super League but personally I want to get over there, get stuck in and play some consistent footy.
“I had a great time in England but I’m very appreciative to be able to do what I love in a foreign country, especially with the opportunity to play in Canada.”
Wolfpack Head Coach Paul Rowley welcomed the signing of Buchanan, highlighting the importance of his signature to the progress of the club to close to the start of the season. He added:
“Jack’s signing is a positive step forward for our squad after losing several forwards recently. Jack has performed at a consistently high level in Super League over the last couple of seasons and will add good experience to the team.
“All our feedback from players who have played with or against Jack have been very positive. I am looking forward to him joining the team from his home in Australia as early as next week.”
