As part of a huge announcement, in which six exciting signings have been added to the Toronto Wolfpack ranks for 2019, Widnes Vikings second rower Tom Olbison has been unveiled as the latest significant addition to the Pack.
The Bradford-born forward is the second former Widnes player to run with the Pack following the Vikings’ relegation from Super League. He will link up with former teammate Joe Mellor in lining up in Wolfpack colours in the Betfred Championship next year. Toronto Wolfpack Director of Rugby, Brian Noble, commented:
“I have watched closely Tom’s career develop from his early promise at Bulls to his recent strong seasons in Super League with Widnes and his latest season as their Player of the Year. I really believe Tom will be a huge addition for the Wolfpack.
“Tom has played almost 200 Super League games and still has his best years ahead of him. We really do feel Tom, together with all our new signings, will add to our existing quality to make 2019 a huge season for our fans.
Olbison adds more top-level quality and depth to the Toronto forward pack, bringing with him a wealth of Super League experience that he can call upon as he helps grow the game of Rugby League in North America.
The 27-year-old came through the academy ranks at Bradford Bulls during their time in Super League and emerged as a regular and consistent performer at Odsal for eight seasons, amassing almost 150 appearances.
Olbison was loyal to the Bulls following their relegation from the top flight but was forced to move ahead of the 2017 season and joined the Vikings where he quickly became one of the first names on the team sheet.
Capable of playing on both sides of the field, the forward brings an appetite for hard work both on and off the field. Those values will prove key for Toronto as they prepare to make another assault on promotion to Super League. Olbison said:
“I’m looking forward to playing with a very talented group of players and in front of a great crowd at Lamport Stadium. I’m a hard-working player, a strong ball carrier and I can’t wait to show the fans what I can do next season.”
