Toronto Wolfpack vs DC Calvary

On a beautiful late summer night, the Toronto Wolfpack returned to The Den at Lamport Stadium for the first time in almost two years on Saturday for the inaugural Toronto Wolfpack, Canada Cup game against the DC Cavalry

Facing a DC Cavalry team lead by Wolfpack fan favourites and stars, Ryan Burroughs and guest coach, Blake Wallace both teams were welcomed by a crowd of 1,200 enthusiastic fans including former Wolfpack Kit Man, Simon Gelder many of whom  were dressed in Wolfpack jerseys.

After Nathan Roberts looked to have scored from dummy half, the Wolfpack quickly went left with a long pass from Jason Park and quick hands from Greg Wise and Josh Allan putting Blake Mahovic over in the corner for the club’s first try. Nathan Roberts converting the try with a great kick from the sideline.

Shortly after Mahovic was at it again creating a great individual try out of nothing, sidestepping two players on a jinking 15m run to the try line.

Mahovic was at it again when after a great run from Nathan Robert, his cross-field kick found right winger, Darsha Wadduwage who pirouetted around his opposite number before scoring with a spectacular swan dive.

After a Cavalry turn over deep inside Wolfpack territory the team would score the team try of the night on the back of a flashing, tackle busting 60 metre run by winger Steven Adu that was followed by two strong runs from Tyrone Rowe and Jason Chuck. After a quick play the ball, Roberts spun the ball out to Wise who threw a long pass to Josh Allan who found Blake Mahovic who then found a surging Jordan Henry who stepped inside his opposite number before fending off DC second rower, Chris Frazier who was coming across in cover on a 20 metre run to the try line. Roberts converting the try.

The Wolfpack were dominating with replacement prop Tyronie Rowe ably supported by long runs from Callum Botchar and centre Luke Toroca proving more than a handful with his back of the fence runs from kick offs. Unfortunately, after an error after one of these runs form the back of a scrum, a long pass from Ryan Burroughs found centre, Carlos Vegerano who beat the cover on a 70m run to the tryline. Max Riseham converting the try.

The Cavalry gained confidence from the try and continued to apply pressure to the Wolfpack when against the run of play, Steven Adu fielded a Riseham bomb on his way to a spectacular individual try that saw him burst through four defenders followed by a great step that left DC Calvary, fullback Burroughs clutching at air on a  90m run to the try line.

The Wolfpack left the field at half time to a standing ovation and with the score Toronto Wolfpack 26 – DC Calvary 6

Looking to continue to build their first half performance, the Wolfpack scored early in the second half after a great offload from loose forward, Scyler Dumas found Callum Botchar who used his huge frame and strength to break free from the initial tackle and slam the ball down over the line. Nathan Roberts converting.

The game then fell into an arm wrestle with both teams making errors and the game losing its flow before Wolfpack second rower, Jason Park seeing an opportunity forced  his way over after taking a quick tap before replacement second rower, Andrei Bashevsky on the back of another strong run from fullback Mahovic crossed over to score in the dying minutes. Roberts converting the Bashevsky try to finish the scoring.
