Inaugural Americas Rugby League Nines Tournament A Triumph
The inaugural Rugby League Americas Nines tournament was held at Lamport Stadium on Saturday afternoon and has been labelled a triumph. Teams from the United States, Canada, Jamaica and Latin America took part in the tournament, with the U.S. coming out on top in an exciting final matchup against Canada, with the scoreboard reading 20-8.
The day featured several enthralling contests, including a third-place playoff between Jamaica and Latin Heat that saw the Caribbean nation claim their spot on the podium 16-10. Women’s Rugby League also took centre stage, with Canada claiming a resounding 26-0 victory over Jamaica to lift the trophy.
Despite the event being slated to occur every second year, officials are already considering holding the event in 2020 due to the success of the tournament. Toronto Wolfpack season ticket holders were granted free entry and organisers were delighted with the number of additional paying spectators, as well as over 7000 fans tuning in to a live stream through Americas Rugby League Facebook page.
Canada Rugby League Association President Bob Jowett spoke glowingly after the event:
“The CRLA is delighted with the success of the inaugural Americas’ Rugby League Nines Tournament, held at the home of the Toronto Wolfpack. We have received thanks for hosting this event from fans that were at Lamport and those around the globe who watched live streams of the action.
“Putting on a successful tournament could not have been achieved without the support and hard work of many people. I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of the organizing committee, everyone involved in the live stream and commentary, match officials, time keepers, players, coaching staff, team managers, staff of the Toronto Wolfpack and GameStar Productions, and City of Toronto staff. Also, the fans that came out to see the action and those who watched the live stream.”
One of the highlights of the day was seeing players from competing sides joining the next generation of Rugby League fans on the pitch for practice during breaks between senior games. The family-friendly atmosphere on display at Lamport Stadium added to what was a complete success in the tournaments maiden outing.
Fans wanting to support the CRLA further can purchase a WatchNRL live pass. If done before May 27th, subscribers will receive their first month free, with 20% of their total fee going to supporting the CRLA and their push to grow Rugby in Canada.
