Match Preview: Batley Bulldogs vs Toronto Wolfpack
Toronto Wolfpack are back in the UK this Sunday for a clash with ninth-placed Batley Bulldogs on their home turf of Fox’s Biscuits Stadium. Despite a healthy lead in the Betfred Championship standings, the Wolfpack will need to throw everything at a Bulldogs side that will still be holding onto hopes of finding a way into the 2019 finals series.
The last time these two sides met was round seven at KCOM Craven Park in Hull and the result was a strong victory for the Wolfpack, 12-34. Matty Russell and Ricky Leutele owned the left wing that day, registering four tries collectively and ultimately proving the difference. The fixture ended amidst a huge downpour that included hailstones assaulting the playing surface and as a result limited scoring opportunities in the second half. The weather forecast in Batley currently shows nothing but sunshine across the weekend and so the players are unlikely to have to contend with the elements this time around.
The Bulldogs are coming off a tough loss to Widnes Vikings last weekend, unable to hold on to a narrow half-time lead and eventually succumbing 28-22. Niall Walker continued his impressive season to date with two tries while Louis Jouffret was again good from the boot, converting three difficult chances.
For the Wolfpack, it was another impressive home victory in their last outing, extracting a little revenge against Toulouse Olympique, the only team to beat them so far in 2019. Gareth O’Brien has been the man to watch in recent times for the Wolfpack, running creative routes out of defence, breaking the opposition lines in attack all while delivering near-faultless performances from the kicking tee. Brian McDermott has plenty of options when it comes to his line-up so Batley will be preparing to face a multitude of different attacks come Sunday.
Kickoff is 10am for Toronto viewers and 3pm in the UK where the ever reliable Wolfpack fans are expected to be in strong attendance. The game will be available on Sky Sports in the UK, Game TV and CBC sports online in Canada and globally courtesy of the Wolfpack’s Facebook page.
