The Wolfpack locked away first place in the standings all the way back in July and will enter Playoffs as the top seed while the Centurions currently hold onto fourth spot and could potentially steal third from York City if the Knights stumble against Halifax RLFC.
Leigh are coming off a loss against the Knights on September 1, failing to maintain their half-time lead and eventually falling by a single point. Before that fixture, the Centurions were on a streak of five consecutive wins that rocketed them into Playoff calculations. Last week’s defeat was a set back in their campaign and one they will be looking to avenge with an upset win at Lamport Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
For the Wolfpack, the coming weekend is an opportunity to extend their longest ever win-streak to 21. Obviously a desirable record, Brian McDermott and his team will be thinking only of the momentum it provides them as they vie for the ultimate prize: promotion to the Super League for the 2020 Season.
Toronto and Leigh have met just the once so far in 2019, back in Round Four at the Centurions’ home ground of Leigh Sports Village. The Wolfpack emerged with a tight 8-14 victory but Leigh actually outscored the visitors in a thrilling second half, proving they have more than enough talent on the field to upset the league leaders.
Historically, the two sides have faced off on four occasions, with just one of those played at Lamport Stadium. The Wolfpack have emerged triumphant from each encounter but not without difficulty. In Round 15, 2018 the Centurions held a 10-point lead at half-time and went on to lose by just two points as a result of a late try that snatched victory for the determined Wolfpack.
With so much on the line for the traveling Centurions and the Wolfpack desperate to maintain their winning form line, this contest is perfectly placed to be one of the games of the season. Wolfpack and Leigh have both shown across the season that they are able to rise to challenges as they present themselves and grind out hard-fought wins. The side that can play harder for longer will come out on top in this one and the result may just change the order of the ladder on the eve of finals. This is a clash not to be missed.
