Toronto Wolfpack Prepare to Host Grand Final

The stage is set for the final game of the 2019 Betfred Championship Season, a fixture that will take place at Lamport Stadium in Toronto for the second consecutive year.
Toronto Wolfpack and Featherstone Rovers will take to the field at 2:30PM ET on Saturday October 5 to see which side will rise to the Super League for the 2020 Season. The all-or-nothing Grand Final assures the victor a place in the Super League for the 2020 Season at the expense of London Broncos, who have been relegated to the Championship.
For the Wolfpack, first pulling on the boots as a Club in 2017, winning their way through to the top division has been the goal since day one. After falling agonizingly short in 2018 when they lost to the Broncos at Lamport Stadium by two points in the Playoff Final, the impending clash against Featherstone will be a defining moment in their young history.
Wolfpack Head Coach Brian McDermott, a seven-time Super League winning player and coach, spoke ahead of the fixture in Toronto:
‘When I took over this Club ahead of the 2019 Season it was clear that every member of the playing list and every staff member was working towards the same thing, promotion to the Super League. We have put together a strong season to this point but it all comes down to one game now and we need to be ready to perform on that stage.
The players are in a great headspace and are excited to tackle this challenge in the same way we have approached every challenge this year. We know our fans will turn out in great numbers as they have all season long and we can’t wait to get out there and give them something to cheer about.’
The Rovers have played a remarkable month of Rugby to reach the Grand Final, making their way to the biggest game of the year from fifth spot in the standings. The Wolfpack have been required to claim just one postseason victory to book their place in the Final, but Featherstone have beaten Leigh Centurions, York City Knights and Toulouse Olympic on their path to Toronto.
On the back of a strong season, the Wolfpack enter the clash with a 2019 record of 27-1 that includes two victories over Featherstone, albeit extremely tight encounters. On 22 April, the Rovers welcomed Toronto to their home ground and narrowly lost, largely in part to a stunning hat-trick from Wolfpack winger Matty Russell.
On 13 July the two sides met again, this time in Toronto, and the result was almost identical. The Wolfpack secured a tight four-point win thanks to a late try from captain Josh McCrone but it could easily have gone the other way in a second half that had the crowd on the edge of the seats.
Both teams will be playing their second-ever top division promotion Playoff in their history. Featherstone fell to Wakefield in 1998 and the Wolfpack stumbled at the final hurdle last year, meaning no matter what the scoreboard reads at the final whistle on Saturday, the Super League will be welcoming a new team into its ranks.
Wolfpack match days at Lamport Stadium are renowned in Toronto as being the best five-hour party in the city thanks to world-class activations and entertainment bookending what will be a fierce on-field battle for 80 minutes. The Beer Garden will be buzzing with energy all day, the half-time show promises to be the best yet and there will be plenty of giveaways, live music and reasons to celebrate all day long.
