Toronto Wolfpack Return to Lamport Stadium With Strong Win Over York City Knights

Toronto Wolfpack have marked their return to Lamport Stadium with a resounding 56-6 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls York City Knights. The result takes the Wolfpack’s 2019 record to 23-1 and extends their winning streak to 18.
York City’s loss sees them drop to third in the standings after Toulouse defeated Widnes Vikings earlier in the day and could see them finish the weekend in fourth should Leigh Centurions claim a win over Rochdale on Sunday afternoon. With top spot locked in, the Wolfpack will have to wait for the logjam in the top five to be finalized before knowing who they will face to kickoff their playoff campaign in September.
The contest was the first of a minimum of six consecutive home games, including playoffs, for the Wolfpack and they got away to a fast start through Gareth O’Brien who single-handedly scored the first 16 points of the game. From there, York weren’t able to wrestle control of the momentum and found themselves on the wrong side of a 32-point deficit at the half-time break.
It was a similar tale in the second period as Andy Ackers registered the Wolfpack’s seventh try in the opening seconds before skipper Josh McCrone recorded his second of the afternoon. A strong crowd of over 7000 were in full voice throughout the day and the traveling Knights fans duly celebrated when their side got on the board in the 51st minute thanks to a brilliant charge from Mike Kelly.
It would be their only points in a tough outing on the road, eventually falling to the Wolfpack by 50 points. A superb team performance from the home side saw seven individual try-scorers and countless strong efforts in both defense and attack from the entire squad that will no doubt please Head Coach Brian McDermott as they look to maintain their form heading into playoffs.
Next to visit Lamport Stadium is Rochdale Hornets, who will be making the journey to Toronto for a clash on Saturday, August 17th, with a 1pm kick-off. Fans can still obtain tickets through Ticketmaster and are encouraged to join the Wolfpack for a huge day of family-friendly fun under the Canadian sun.
