Atkinson graduated from the University of Southampton in 1999 and has over 20 years’ experience in the medical field. Joining Treated.com in 2017, he has extensive knowledge regarding clinical governance and surrounding the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
“The Super League has suspended their games… following suit with a lot of the other big sporting organisations. (COVID-19) is important to think about because it’s spreading so rapidly… and it affects vulnerable and elderly people.
By vulnerable, I mean people that are in and out of hospital for one reason or another or have an underlying health condition. Something like asthma or diabetes which means they are perhaps not as well equipped to deal with an infection.”
With no games currently taking place and the potential of future fixtures to be held behind closed doors, Atkinson spoke about the best methods fans can take to halt the spread of COVID-19.
“In order to protect vulnerable people, we need to try and slow the spread of this disease as much as we can. The best way we do that is by washing our hands. People are sick of hearing this but it is the single most effective thing we can do to stop the virus spreading as fast as it is doing already.
Staying away from big public gatherings is another safety precaution. Staying away from those not only stops you from getting the virus… but it helps to protect the people that you know and come into contact with who are elderly or vulnerable.”
Despite fans inability to cheer on their team in person across the coming weeks, Atkinson also points out that there are other ways to get involved with your favourite sporting Clubs.
“You can still support your team; they all have big fan bases with big social media followings and so supporting there is a good idea. We hope the players stay healthy and also you as fans.”
